Riding by Night

A bike rack at night, Manoa Hawaii

by Jenwren

Excuse me, you are polite,
to stay nowhere in sight.
Let me slip by the light,
past the shops, warm and bright.

The streets, free from motorized blight—
no chatter, clang, or fight.
Darkness and shadows, the limelight,
My wheelset is the playwright.

Building my story like a wainwright,
choosing each word for rolling delight,
to live in dreams for many more a fortnight,
to whisper the story of my quiet plight.

Of the solo ride at night,
because the day is too contrite,
confined to silence, the only respite
for a soul shy from spotlights.
